HUNTINGTON BEACH POOL DECKING

Pool Decking in HB — Built on a Real Base

Most of the failing pool decks we see in Huntington Beach are not failing because of the material. They are failing because the sub-base under them was rushed. The Goldenwest, Edinger/Bolsa, and Adams/Magnolia tracts are full of 1950s and 60s concrete decks that have heaved over root systems, settled at the corner closest to the lawn, and cracked across the deepest part of the pool. The stamped concrete cap somebody added in 2009 did not help.

We rebuild decks from the dirt up. Proper compaction, base rock, drainage layout, edge restraint, and the right material for the lot — travertine and porcelain pavers for coastal Huntington Harbour and Seacliff yards, stamped concrete or concrete pavers inland, flagstone and cool-deck overlays where they fit. One trade, one quote, one timeline.

  • Free on-site consultation with real material samples
  • Engineered sub-base — proper compaction, base rock, and edge restraint
  • Drainage designed in, not bolted on (deck drains, channel drains, pitched surface)
  • All City of HB permits handled where required
  • Cool-on-foot material guidance, not whatever the salesperson is pushing this week

POOL DECK MATERIALS

Pool Decking Options in Huntington Beach

The deck is what you actually walk on. Here is what we install every week in HB — what each material costs, how it handles bare feet in July, and how long it really lasts.

Travertine

Natural limestone, cool underfoot even in HB July sun, and the most-installed premium pool deck in Southern California. French-pattern or honed 16×24 are the two favorites. Hand-sealed every 2–3 years and it lasts a lifetime.

Porcelain Pavers

20mm slab porcelain — the modern answer for clean, contemporary decks. Stain-proof, UV-stable color, salt-tolerant, and you can spec a single 24×48 or 32×32 plank look that does not date. Higher upfront cost, nearly zero maintenance.

Concrete Pavers

Manufactured pavers from Belgard, Angelus, and Acker-Stone. Cost-effective, individual stones can be lifted and reset if the deck shifts, and styles range from tumbled rustic to clean modern. The right midrange pick when you want a real paver look without a stone-yard budget.

Stamped & Decorative Concrete

Poured-in-place concrete with a stamped, broomed, or sandblasted finish. The most affordable replacement option and a clean look when it is done with proper color hardener and joint placement. Reseal every 3–4 years.

Flagstone & Natural Stone

Irregular Arizona flagstone, bluestone, or quartzite for an organic, hand-laid look. Premium cost, premium presence, and very low ongoing maintenance. Works especially well on Seacliff hillside lots and naturalistic Huntington Harbour backyards.

Cool Deck & Texture Overlays

Acrylic-based overlays (Kool Deck, spray-deck, knockdown) over sound existing concrete. The right call when the slab is structurally fine but the surface is dated or hot. 5–10 year life on a properly prepped deck.

SIGNS YOUR HB POOL DECK NEEDS REPLACING

When to Replace Your Huntington Beach Pool Deck

A pool deck does not usually fail overnight. Here is what to look for before it turns into a tripping hazard or a drainage problem.

01

Mid-Century Concrete That Has Heaved

The Goldenwest, Edinger/Bolsa, and Adams/Magnolia tracts are loaded with original 1950s–60s broom-finished concrete decks. After 60+ years of root pressure and soil movement, most have lifted at the seams, cracked through the wide flat sections, and sloped back toward the house. A new deck is rarely a luxury at that point — it is a tripping hazard fix.

02

Coastal Salt-Air Failure

Huntington Harbour, Downtown HB, and Seacliff decks see consistent salt loading from the marine layer. Cheap stamped overlays delaminate inside 2–3 years, low-grade concrete pavers efflorescence-blow, and unsealed travertine pits at the joints. If the deck is showing white powder, sugar-soft surface, or popped paver corners, salt is winning.

03

Hot to Walk On in July

Standard gray concrete and dark pavers hit 120–140°F in HB July sun and burn bare feet. If you are stepping carefully from the towel to the water on a 90° day, the material is the wrong choice for your lot. Travertine, light porcelain, or a properly mixed cool-deck overlay solves it.

04

Settlement on Huntington Harbour Lots

Huntington Harbour canal lots sit on alluvial fill with shallow groundwater. Decks there settle more than inland decks, especially at the corners furthest from the pool shell. Pavers tilting and concrete slabs separating from the coping are the two most common signs the base was undersized.

05

Drainage Pooling at the Coping

Water that sits at the coping after a rain, or after you hose down the deck, means the slope is wrong — running back toward the pool instead of away. Long-term it stains the coping, scales the waterline, and rots whatever wood it touches. Re-grading is part of a proper replacement.

06

The Stamped Cap Someone Did in 2009

A stamped concrete or spray-deck overlay on top of an already-cracked deck is a common HB sight. It covers the visual problem for 3–5 years, then telegraphs every crack through and sometimes delaminates in big sheets. If your deck has had a cosmetic overlay before, a full replacement on a proper base is usually the move.

OUR DECKING PROCESS

How a Pool Deck Build Actually Works

A deck that lasts 20 years and one that fails in 5 are built the same way at the top — what separates them is the sub-base and the drainage. Here is our standard sequence.

1

On-Site Visit & Material Samples

We come to your Huntington Beach home, look at the existing deck, check drainage and base condition, and bring real material samples. Travertine in your hand, in your light, next to your tile — not a picture on a phone.

2

Demo & Haul-Off

Saw-cut, break out the old deck, and load out. Most demos are 1–3 days depending on size, slab thickness, and access. We protect coping, plaster, and adjacent landscaping every time.

3

Sub-Base & Drainage

Properly compacted base rock, graded slope away from the house and the pool coping, channel drains and area drains where the lot requires them. This is where decks live or die — and where the cheapest bids skip steps.

4

Material Install

Paver and stone install over a proper bedding layer with polymeric or mortar joints. Concrete pours include rebar where engineered, control joints in the right places, and color/stamp work the day of the pour. Most installs run 5–14 days.

5

Seal, Detail, Walk-Through

Seal natural stone and concrete, dial in joint sand on pavers, clean off every drop of mortar, and walk the finished deck with you. Care instructions and re-seal schedule are in writing so you know exactly what your deck needs and when.

POOL DECKING FAQs

Common Questions About Pool Decking in HB

Typical HB pool deck pricing on a 600–1,000 sq ft deck (rip-out and replace):

  • Stamped / decorative concrete — $12,500 to $23,000
  • Concrete pavers (Belgard, Angelus) — $16,000 to $29,000
  • Travertine — $20,000 to $38,000
  • Porcelain pavers (20mm slab) — $24,000 to $44,000
  • Flagstone / natural stone — $27,000 to $48,000
  • Cool-deck / Kool Deck overlay (over sound concrete) — $6,500 to $15,000

Huntington Harbour canal lots and Seacliff coastal lots run at the upper end of each range due to access, premium sealing, and salt-tolerant material specs.

8 to 21 days on site, depending on material and size. Demo is 1–3 days. Sub-base and drainage is 2–5 days (this is the part where shortcuts fail later). Material install is 5–14 days — concrete is faster, paver and stone work is slower. Sealing and detail finish out the last day or two. A cool-deck overlay over existing sound concrete can be done in 4–7 days total.

Light-colored travertine is the standard answer — measures 15–25°F cooler than gray concrete in the same conditions, and stays comfortable on bare feet through most of the HB summer. Light 20mm porcelain pavers are right behind it. Properly mixed cool-deck overlays are designed for the same temperature drop. Avoid dark concrete pavers and pure black flagstone if barefoot comfort matters — they look great but they roast feet in July.

Decking work that does not change the footprint, structure, or pool barrier usually does not require a separate City of Huntington Beach permit. Strip-and-replace in the same shape is generally non-permit. Expanding the deck, changing pool barrier configuration, adding drainage tied to public storm systems, or adding electrical (deck lighting, outdoor kitchen tie-ins) does require a City of HB permit. We pull whatever the project actually needs.

It comes down to the slab underneath. If the existing concrete is structurally sound — no through-cracks, no significant heaving, slope still drains correctly — a cool-deck or spray-deck overlay is a great call at roughly a third of the replacement cost. If the slab has cracks wider than a credit card, sections that have lifted, or slope back toward the house, an overlay just hides the problem temporarily. We do a free walk-through and give you a straight answer.

Only if the sub-base was done wrong. Pavers laid on properly compacted base rock with the right bedding layer and edge restraint stay flat for decades. The cheaper jobs that skip a real base — pavers on sand over loose dirt — start tilting within 2–3 years, especially on Huntington Harbour canal lots where the ground moves more. We spec real base, real compaction, and real edge restraint. If a paver ever lifts, we can pull it, re-bed it, and put it back — one of the advantages of paver decks over poured concrete.

Yes — and most HB homeowners doing one start considering the other. The pool is already drained for the resurface, the deck is already torn up for the new install, equipment access is already staged, and you only deal with one mobilization. Combining usually saves 10–15% versus running the two projects separately and gets the backyard back faster.

"I contacted Peter Werth after seeing a patio roof he built for a friend. He was prompt and the consultation was very helpful. There were two challenges that were met in making and installing the new patio roof. The first one was how to build the roof around the chimney of the house and the second one was how to preserve the grapevines planted by my late husband. Both challenges were successfully met and the roof is great. Pete also gave me some advise on how to build up the patio floor to prevent flooding when it rains and could help me with that process in the future. I recommend Werth Builders to anyone needing any of their long list of services provided."

"My husband and I used Werth Builders to create our backyard oasis and they definitely delivered. We absolutely love the way everything turned out and would recommend Peter and his company to anyone! I was very impressed with the fast response I always received when I contacted Peter or anyone working for him. They went above and beyond to make sure that we were happy each step of the way. They even pushed things through at the end to make sure our family that was visiting from out of town was able to enjoy it with us. Again, if you are looking for a contractor you should absolutely give Werth Builders a call."

Christina H.

"We recently had our new pool constructed by Peter and his crew. Peter gave us the best price, he was very friendly and courteous. We had good communication with Peter throughout the entire process. His crew is very efficient and professional. The pool is awesome, well constructed and he added 3 spillway features. We are beyond pleased with the finished product and would recommend Werth Builders."

Noe T.

"I met with 5 different contractors and only received bids from 3 of them. One bid was exceptionally low, the other exceptionally high, and Werth Builders bid was right within the ballpark of what we expecting for the project's size. We put in a 600 sq. ft. patio (permitted) with lights and ceiling fans. We also laid down pavers and put drainage and cement on our side yard that used to be covered with weeds. Peter was great to work with. He was down to earth and approachable. We told him our vision and he made it happen. We didn't see any paper plans before they set to work and we were ok with that, but it did lead to a slightly bigger patio that we had originally planned for; still looked great. Peter responded to texts promptly and was able to accommodate our schedule. His crews were polite and showed up around 7am every morning when on site. Overall, solid experience."
