HUNTINGTON BEACH POOL RESURFACING
Pool Resurfacing in HB — Done the Right Way
Huntington Beach pool finishes do not age the same way inland ones do. Salt air carries the marine layer into the chemistry, full-sun lots in the Goldenwest and Edinger/Bolsa tracts dry plaster harder than a shaded canyon would, and Huntington Harbour canal pools deal with bayfront salt loading every day. Three different finish failure modes — one city.
Werth Builders has been resurfacing Huntington Beach pools since 1994. PebbleTec, PebbleSheen, PebbleFina, quartz aggregates, glass bead, and standard white plaster — whichever fits the pool, the budget, and the look. Always with a full chip-out, never a skim-coat over old material. That is the part that decides whether a finish lasts 5 years or 15.

POOL FINISH OPTIONS
Pool Resurfacing Finishes in Huntington Beach
The finish is the part of the pool you touch, look at, and pay to replace. Here is what we install every week in HB — what it costs, how long it lasts, and how it actually behaves in HB salt air.
White Plaster Replaster
Classic marcite/marble-dust plaster. Lowest up-front cost, smooth feel, 7–12 year life. The right call when you are prepping for sale or stretching another decade out of a basic finish on an inland HB pool.
Quartz Aggregate (Diamond Brite, Hydrazzo)
Plaster blended with crushed quartz. Subtle sparkle, better stain and chemistry resistance than plain plaster, 12–15 year life. The most popular mid-range upgrade for HB — solid value per year and holds up well against salt air.
PebbleTec & PebbleSheen
Natural pebble aggregate exposed at the surface. 15–20+ year life, excellent stain and chemistry resistance, the deep water color most homeowners actually want. PebbleSheen is the smoother-foot version — our most-installed finish in coastal HB.
PebbleFina & Mini-Pebble
Smaller aggregate, refined texture, smoothest of the pebble family on bare feet. Great for spas, tanning ledges, and HB pools where comfort matters as much as color.
Glass Bead Finishes
Recycled glass beads create a luminous, mirror-like interior. Smooth feel, excellent chemistry resistance, modern look. Pairs especially well with the contemporary architecture in Seacliff and newer Huntington Harbour rebuilds.
Tile & Coping (Done Together)
If the finish is going, the waterline tile usually is too. We strip dated 6×6 tile and swap in glass mosaic, natural stone, or porcelain — and replace cracked coping the same trip. One mobilization, one cure, one clean result.
SIGNS YOUR HB POOL NEEDS RESURFACING
When to Resurface Your Huntington Beach Pool
Most pool finishes start showing real wear between year 7 and year 15. In Huntington Beach, coastal salt and full-sun UV usually move that timeline forward. Here is what to watch for.
Rough Sandpaper Feel on Steps and Floor
Your feet feel sandpaper instead of smooth plaster. Most common on the steps and the deep-end floor, where finishes wear first. The plaster is past its life and starting to trap algae in micro-pits.
Persistent Stains You Cannot Acid-Wash Off
Mineral stains, rust spots, or organic ghosting that come back within weeks of an acid wash. The finish has lost its top layer and absorbs everything now. A resurface is the fix — chemistry will not catch it back up.
Coastal Etching and Calcium Scale
Downtown HB, Seacliff, and Huntington Harbour pools see calcium scale ribboning at the waterline and pinpoint etching on the plaster surface from salt-air chemistry loading. Once the etch is visible, the finish is on its last leg.
Plaster Chalking Off in Your Hand
Run your hand along the wall and white powder comes off. The cement matrix is failing and the bond is giving up. Within a year you will see hollow spots and delamination. Time to resurface.
Hollow Spots When You Tap the Wall
Tap the plaster wall and some sections sound hollow. The finish has lost adhesion to the shell underneath. Hollow spots blow out, expose gunite, and accelerate. A full chip-out and refinish is the right call.
Bottom of the Pool Looks Bruised or Mottled
Dark patches, gray ghosting, or mottled color that did not exist three years ago. The finish has stopped reflecting evenly because the surface texture has degraded. A resurface restores the water color you actually paid for.
OUR RESURFACING PROCESS
How a Pool Resurface Actually Works
A resurface that lasts is 80% prep. Here is how we run a resurface from drain to hand-off in Huntington Beach.
On-Site Visit & Real Samples
We come to your Huntington Beach home, look at the existing finish, and bring real-world plaster, quartz, and pebble samples. Color in a brochure is not the same as color in your light over your tile.
Drain & Full Chip-Out
We drain to the sanitary sewer cleanout (no street dumping), dechlorinate first, and then full chip-out of the existing finish to expose sound gunite. A skim-coat over old plaster is what makes finishes fail in three years — we do not do that.
Surface Prep & Bond Coat
Acid wash where needed, hollow-spot repairs, and a proper bond coat to lock the new finish to the shell. Tile and coping (if you are replacing them) happen on this same visit.
Finish Application
Trowel application by certified crews. Pebble finishes get a controlled acid-wash exposure the morning after to bring the aggregate to the surface evenly — the step most pricing-by-the-square-foot crews skip.
Fill, Start-Up & 30-Day Follow-Up
Continuous fill (no stopping), start-up chemistry to manage the cure, and a 30-day follow-up so the finish cures without scale or staining. Pebble cures into its full color over the first 30–60 days — we walk you through what is normal.
POOL RESURFACING FAQs
Common Questions About Pool Resurfacing in HB
Typical Huntington Beach resurfacing prices on a standard 14×28 pool:
- White plaster (full chip-out) — $5,500 to $10,000
- Quartz aggregate (Diamond Brite, Hydrazzo) — $8,000 to $14,000
- PebbleTec or PebbleSheen — $10,500 to $17,000
- PebbleFina / mini-pebble — $11,500 to $18,000
- Glass bead finish — $15,000 to $24,000+
Add roughly $3,500–$7,500 if you replace waterline tile and $3,500–$6,500 for new coping while the pool is drained. Huntington Harbour canal lots and Seacliff coastal lots run at the upper end because of access and material handling.
Most HB resurfaces are 7 to 14 days on site. Drain and chip-out runs 1–2 days, surface prep and any tile or coping work runs 2–5 days, finish application is one long day, and then we fill (about 24 hours on a standard pool) and start chemistry. A simple plaster job at the fast end is closer to a week; a full PebbleTec with new tile and coping is closer to two.
For most HB pools, yes — and the math is straightforward. White plaster lasts roughly 7–12 years here; PebbleTec or PebbleSheen lasts 15–20+. The price difference on a typical resurface is $4,000–$7,000. Spread over the extra decade of life, pebble costs less per year. In Huntington Harbour and Downtown HB, the gap is wider because plaster degrades faster on coastal lots.
A cosmetic resurface (chip-out and new finish in the same shape) does not require a City of Huntington Beach permit. Replacing tile and coping while the pool is drained also does not. Anything structural — reshaping the shell, replumbing, adding a spillover spa, gas or electrical work — does. Werth Builders pulls every permit a project actually needs.
Technically yes — it is called a bond-coat overlay or skim-coat. We almost never recommend it in HB. The old plaster is already failing (that is why you are calling), and a new finish bonded to a failing layer fails with it, usually within 2–4 years. A proper chip-out is the difference between a finish that lasts and one that delaminates.
For Huntington Harbour, Downtown HB, and Seacliff pools we recommend PebbleSheen, PebbleFina, or glass bead — not standard white plaster. Salt-air chemistry on bayfront and near-shore lots attacks plaster faster, and the resale value gap on a coastal HB home between a premium finish and a basic one is real. The price gap up front is usually $4,000–$7,000; the saved replacement cost over a decade is several times that.
Real-world finish life on an HB pool, assuming proper start-up chemistry and normal maintenance: standard plaster 7–12 years, quartz aggregate 12–15, PebbleTec / PebbleSheen 15–20+, PebbleFina 15–20, glass bead 15–20+. Coastal lots (Harbour, Downtown, Seacliff) tend to land at the low end of those ranges; inland HB lots at the high end.
