Pool Decking Laguna Beach, CA — Travertine, Porcelain, Flagstone & Bluestone

Laguna Beach pool decks have to survive aggressive salt air, hillside settlement, and the strictest design review process in Orange County. Werth Builders has been building Laguna pool decks since 1994 — with proper sub-base, designed-in drainage, DRB-ready submittals, and CDPs where required.

LAGUNA BEACH POOL DECKING

Pool Decking in Laguna Beach — Built for Canyon, Cliff & DRB

A Laguna Beach pool deck has to do four things at once: handle the coastal salt mist, manage hillside or canyon drainage, get past the Design Review Board, and fit a lot that is rarely flat or rectangular. North Laguna cottages, Three Arch Bay and Emerald Bay estates, Top of the World hillside lots, Bluebird Canyon, Mystic Hills, and Woods Cove all have their own constraints — and DRB review applies to anything visible from public ways.

We build decks across every Laguna neighborhood — compact cottage courtyards, multi-elevation canyon decks, and cliff-adjacent estate decks. Travertine and 20mm porcelain pavers are the default coastal-zone picks; flagstone and dimensional bluestone where the architecture calls for it. Always on a real sub-base. Always with drainage designed in. DRB submittals prepared in-house.

  • Free on-site consultation with real material samples
  • Engineered sub-base — proper compaction, base rock, and edge restraint
  • Drainage designed in, not bolted on (deck drains, channel drains, pitched surface)
  • All City of Laguna Beach permits handled where required
  • Cool-on-foot material guidance, not whatever the salesperson is pushing this week

POOL DECK MATERIALS

Pool Decking Options in Laguna Beach

The deck is what you actually walk on. Here is what we install every week in Laguna Beach — what each material costs, how it handles bare feet in summer, and how long it really lasts.

Travertine

Natural limestone, cool underfoot even in summer, and the most-installed premium pool deck in Southern California. French-pattern or honed 16×24 are the two favorites. Hand-sealed every 2–3 years and it lasts a lifetime.

Porcelain Pavers

20mm slab porcelain — the modern answer for clean, contemporary decks. Stain-proof, UV-stable color, salt-tolerant, and you can spec a single 24×48 or 32×32 plank look that does not date. Higher upfront cost, nearly zero maintenance.

Concrete Pavers

Manufactured pavers from Belgard, Angelus, and Acker-Stone. Cost-effective, individual stones can be lifted and reset if the deck shifts, and styles range from tumbled rustic to clean modern. The right midrange pick when you want a real paver look without a stone-yard budget.

Stamped & Decorative Concrete

Poured-in-place concrete with a stamped, broomed, or sandblasted finish. The most affordable replacement option and a clean look when it is done with proper color hardener and joint placement. Reseal every 3–4 years.

Flagstone & Natural Stone

Irregular Arizona flagstone, bluestone, or quartzite for an organic, hand-laid look. Premium cost, premium presence, and very low ongoing maintenance. Works especially well on hillside and naturalistic backyards.

Cool Deck & Texture Overlays

Acrylic-based overlays (Kool Deck, spray-deck, knockdown) over sound existing concrete. The right call when the slab is structurally fine but the surface is dated or hot. 5–10 year life on a properly prepped deck.

SIGNS YOUR LAGUNA BEACH POOL DECK NEEDS REPLACING

When to Replace Your Laguna Beach Pool Deck

A pool deck does not usually fail overnight. Here is what to look for before it turns into a tripping hazard or a drainage problem.

01

Laguna Beach DRB Submittals

Almost any visible hardscape change in Laguna Beach falls under Design Review Board scrutiny. We prepare full DRB submittal packages with material samples, color renderings, drainage notes, and the supporting documentation board members expect. Approval windows commonly run 6–12 weeks; the package quality determines how many rounds you go.

02

Aggressive Coastal Salt Tolerance

Laguna sits at the coast and the salt loading is heavier than Newport, HB, or even Dana Point in some canyons. Cheap stamped overlays delaminate, low-grade pavers efflorescence-blow inside 18–24 months, and unsealed travertine pits at the joints. We spec premium-grade travertine, 20mm porcelain pavers, or properly sealed concrete pavers — and avoid materials that look fine in year one and fail in year three.

03

Hillside & Canyon Multi-Elevation Decks

Top of the World, Mystic Hills, Bluebird Canyon, Arch Beach Heights, and the upper sides of North and South Laguna are full of multi-elevation backyards connected by steps, retaining walls, and view-corridor cuts. We engineer the structural retaining, design drainage so the upper deck does not flood the lower one, and detail the steps so they read as part of the architecture.

04

Tight Lots in Woods Cove & the Cottage Districts

North Laguna and South Laguna cottage lots are tight, often shared with neighbors a few feet away, and access is sometimes a single skinny staircase from the street. Demo, material delivery, and dust control all need a plan. We coordinate schedule, dumpster placement, and neighbor courtesy notices to keep a Laguna cottage project from turning into a street fight.

05

Drainage for Canyon & Cliff Lots

Laguna canyon and cliff lots have specific drainage rules — runoff cannot just sheet onto a neighbor or toward a canyon edge. We design channel drains, area drains, and properly graded slopes from the start, route discharge legally, and document the drainage in the DRB and CDP packages where required.

06

Coastal Development Permits Where Applicable

Strip-and-replace decking in the same footprint usually does not require a CDP. Expanding the deck, changing drainage outfall, work near canyon or cliff edges, or projects in Coastal Commission appellate jurisdiction zones can. We prepare CDPs in-house when the project actually needs one.

OUR DECKING PROCESS

How a Pool Deck Build Actually Works

A deck that lasts 20 years and one that fails in 5 are built the same way at the top — what separates them is the sub-base and the drainage. Here is our standard sequence.

1

On-Site Visit & Material Samples

We come to your Laguna Beach home, look at the existing deck, check drainage, and bring real material samples. Travertine in your hand, in your light, next to your tile — not a picture on a phone.

2

Demo & Haul-Off

Saw-cut, break out the old deck, and load out. Most demos are 1–3 days depending on size, slab thickness, and access. We protect coping, plaster, and adjacent landscaping every time.

3

Sub-Base & Drainage

Properly compacted base rock, graded slope away from the house and the pool coping, channel drains and area drains where the lot requires them. This is where decks live or die — and where the cheapest bids skip steps.

4

Material Install

Paver and stone install over a proper bedding layer with polymeric or mortar joints. Concrete pours include rebar where engineered, control joints in the right places, and color/stamp work the day of the pour. Most installs run 5–14 days.

5

Seal, Detail, Walk-Through

Seal natural stone and concrete, dial in joint sand on pavers, clean off every drop of mortar, and walk the finished deck with you. Care instructions and re-seal schedule are in writing so you know exactly what your deck needs and when.

POOL DECKING FAQs

Common Questions About Pool Decking in Laguna Beach

Typical Laguna Beach pool deck pricing on a 700–1,100 sq ft deck (rip-out and replace):

  • Stamped / decorative concrete — $14,500 to $27,000
  • Concrete pavers (Belgard, Acker-Stone) — $19,000 to $33,000
  • Travertine — $23,000 to $44,000
  • Porcelain pavers (20mm slab) — $27,000 to $50,000
  • Flagstone, bluestone, or quartzite — $31,000 to $58,000
  • Cool-deck / Kool Deck overlay (over sound concrete) — $7,500 to $17,000

Hillside, canyon, and gated-community lots run at the upper end because of access, DRB submittal work, and salt-tolerant material specs.

If the deck is visible from a public way, road, or trail — usually yes. The DRB reviews material, color, joint, drainage, and design choices. We prepare the package with samples, renderings, drainage notes, and the supporting documentation board members expect. Approval windows commonly run 6–12 weeks depending on agenda.

For Laguna decks the two materials we recommend are premium-grade travertine (sealed every 2–3 years) and 20mm porcelain pavers (essentially zero maintenance, stain-proof, UV-stable). We generally steer clients away from stamped concrete and low-grade pavers on coastal Laguna lots because both have a history of failing fast.

A strip-and-replace in the same footprint, with no changes to pool barrier, drainage outfall, or grading, usually does not require a City permit. Expanding the deck, changing the barrier, adding electrical, changing drainage tie-ins, or work near canyon or cliff edges can require a permit, a CDP, or both. DRB review is a separate process that applies to visible aesthetic changes. We pull whatever the project actually needs.

10 to 24 days on site, depending on material and size. Demo is 1–4 days. Sub-base and drainage is 3–6 days. Material install runs 6–18 days. DRB review runs separately ahead of construction, commonly 6–12 weeks; CDP (when required) can add 4–10 more weeks.

Yes — these are most of our Laguna jobs. Hillside and canyon decks involve engineered retaining, multi-elevation steps, drainage that routes away from the structure and the canyon or cliff edge, and view-corridor cuts where DRB or the City requires them. We do the structural engineering, drainage design, and DRB + CDP submittals in-house.

Yes — and most Laguna homeowners doing one start considering the other. The pool is already drained, the deck is already torn up, and access is already staged. Combining usually saves 10–15%, reduces DRB submittals to a single package, and gets the backyard back faster.

"My husband and I used Werth Builders to create our backyard oasis and they definitely delivered. We absolutely love the way everything turned out and would recommend Peter and his company to anyone! I was very impressed with the fast response I always received when I contacted Peter or anyone working for him. They went above and beyond to make sure that we were happy each step of the way. They even pushed things through at the end to make sure our family that was visiting from out of town was able to enjoy it with us. Again, if you are looking for a contractor you should absolutely give Werth Builders a call."

"I contacted Peter Werth after seeing a patio roof he built for a friend. He was prompt and the consultation was very helpful. There were two challenges that were met in making and installing the new patio roof. The first one was how to build the roof around the chimney of the house and the second one was how to preserve the grapevines planted by my late husband. Both challenges were successfully met and the roof is great. Pete also gave me some advise on how to build up the patio floor to prevent flooding when it rains and could help me with that process in the future. I recommend Werth Builders to anyone needing any of their long list of services provided."

"We recently had our new pool constructed by Peter and his crew. Peter gave us the best price, he was very friendly and courteous. We had good communication with Peter throughout the entire process. His crew is very efficient and professional. The pool is awesome, well constructed and he added 3 spillway features. We are beyond pleased with the finished product and would recommend Werth Builders."

Noe T.

"I met with 5 different contractors and only received bids from 3 of them. One bid was exceptionally low, the other exceptionally high, and Werth Builders bid was right within the ballpark of what we expecting for the project's size. We put in a 600 sq. ft. patio (permitted) with lights and ceiling fans. We also laid down pavers and put drainage and cement on our side yard that used to be covered with weeds. Peter was great to work with. He was down to earth and approachable. We told him our vision and he made it happen. We didn't see any paper plans before they set to work and we were ok with that, but it did lead to a slightly bigger patio that we had originally planned for; still looked great. Peter responded to texts promptly and was able to accommodate our schedule. His crews were polite and showed up around 7am every morning when on site. Overall, solid experience."
