LAGUNA BEACH SPA BUILDERS
Custom Spa Construction in Laguna Beach
Many Laguna Beach lots cannot fit a full pool — but a custom in-ground spa fits beautifully. Pier Bowl, Woods Cove, North Laguna, and South Laguna cottages have lots small enough that a 6x6 or 7x8 spa with bench seating is the right answer. Hillside view lots in Top of the World and Mystic Hills support standalone gunite spas with infinity-edge views over the Pacific.
Werth Builders has been building Laguna Beach spas since 1994. Spillover, standalone, attached, raised, infinity-edge — designed for the lot, the DRB, the CDP, and the geology of this city.

Custom Spa Configurations We Build
Every Laguna Beach backyard is different. Here are the configurations we work with most.
Spillover Spa
The classic — spa raised above pool with sheeting water spilling over a tiled wall. Visually striking and functionally efficient (one heater serves both).
Standalone In-Ground Spa
Custom gunite spa, no pool needed. Built to your exact dimensions and finish — common for backyards that already have a pool, or yards that don't fit a full pool.
Attached Spa
Spa built into the same shell wall as the pool, sharing a tile cap. Cleanest look for modern architecture and infinity-edge designs.
Raised Spa with Tile Wall
Spa elevated above deck height with a finished stacked-stone, tile, or board-formed concrete wall. High-impact visual centerpiece.
Spa Retrofit
Adding a spa to an existing pool. We tie into existing plumbing or add dedicated equipment, match the new spa finish to a fresh pool resurface.
Equipment & Automation
Variable-speed pumps, low-NOx heaters, and smart controllers — including marine-grade specs when the property requires them.
CUSTOM vs PREFAB
Should I Build Custom or Buy a Prefab Spa?
Both work. Both have homeowners that swear by them. Here is the honest comparison so you can decide what fits your Laguna Beach backyard.
Prefab / Portable Spa
Drop-in acrylic or rotomolded shell, 110V or 220V plug-in, no permitting in most cases. Lasts 10-15 years. Fastest path to soaking but lower resale value and cannot be customized.
$8K–$20K InstalledCustom Gunite Spa
Built into the ground, finished with the same tile and plaster as a pool, lasts 30+ years. Fully custom dimensions, depth, seating, and equipment. Adds property value.
$25K–$50KSpillover Spa (with new pool)
Best-in-class look and the most efficient option if you are already building a pool — shared equipment, shared finish, single permit application.
$15K–$30K (incremental)Spa Retrofit (existing pool)
Adding a spa to a pool that does not currently have one. Plumbing tie-ins, partial pool drain, structural and finish work. Mid-range cost, high-impact change.

Spa Building Tuned to Laguna Beach
Building a custom spa here means understanding this city specifically — climate, soils, permitting, and the way Laguna Beach homeowners actually use their backyards.
DRB-Approved Designs
Laguna Beach DRB reviews most spa work — including standalone spas visible from public view. We prepare submittal packages with elevations, materials samples, and view-equity analyses to clear the public hearing on the first round.
Tight-Lot Cottage Spas
Woods Cove, North Laguna, Pier Bowl, and South Laguna cottages have the smallest lots in OC where pool work happens. A 6x6 or 7x8 standalone spa fits where a full pool will not, with sound-tuned equipment for tight neighbors.
Hillside Infinity-Edge Spas
Top of the World, Mystic Hills, Arch Beach Heights, and Three Arch Bay hillside lots support infinity-edge standalone spas with Pacific or Catalina views. We engineer caisson-supported spa shells, integrate retaining walls, and design lighting that respects DRB dark-sky considerations.
Marine-Grade Equipment
Coastal-zone Laguna Beach spa equipment needs 316 stainless heat exchangers, sealed pads, and corrosion-resistant electrical. Generic equipment fails fast on Three Arch Bay, Emerald Bay, and bluff-front cottage installations.

SPA BUILDER FAQs
Common Questions About Building a Spa in Laguna Beach
A standalone custom gunite spa in Laguna Beach typically runs $28,000 to $60,000, depending on size, raised walls, tile, marine-grade equipment, and finish. Hillside and bluff-edge installations with engineered shoring and DRB iteration run higher.
A standalone spa takes 5-9 weeks from excavation to first soak, plus 2-4 months for DRB and (where applicable) CDP review.
Yes — provided the design respects neighbor view-equity, materials match the home and neighborhood vernacular, equipment is screened, and lighting is dark-sky-compliant. We prepare DRB packages as part of our standard scope.
For DRB approval and Laguna's aesthetic standards, custom gunite is almost always the answer. Gunite lasts 30+ years, integrates with home architecture, and adds real property value.
Yes to a permit. Most spas in the coastal zone also require a CDP — issued by the City for most parcels, by the CCC for Three Arch Bay, Irvine Cove, Blue Lagoon, and Hobo Canyon. Per California HSC §115922, all new spas require at least 2 of 7 approved drowning-prevention safety features.
Yes. Werth Builders is a fully licensed California pool contractor (CSLB #777-575, B-1 General + C-53 Swimming Pool), bonded, and insured for general liability and workers' compensation.
