LONG BEACH POOL DECKING

Pool Decking in Long Beach — Built on a Real Base

Most of the failing pool decks we see in Long Beach are not failing because of the material. They are failing because the sub-base under them was rushed. Bixby Knolls, Los Altos, California Heights, and Park Estates are full of 1950s and 60s concrete decks that have heaved over root systems, settled at the corner closest to the lawn, and cracked across the deepest part of the pool. The stamped concrete cap someone added in 2008 did not help.

We rebuild decks from the dirt up. Proper compaction, base rock, drainage layout, edge restraint, and the right material for the lot — travertine and porcelain pavers for the coastal salt-air neighborhoods, stamped concrete or concrete pavers inland, flagstone and cool-deck overlays where they fit. One trade, one quote, one timeline.

  • Free on-site consultation with real material samples
  • Engineered sub-base — proper compaction, base rock, and edge restraint
  • Drainage designed in, not bolted on (deck drains, channel drains, pitched surface)
  • All City of Long Beach permits handled where required
  • Cool-on-foot material guidance, not whatever the salesperson is pushing this week

POOL DECK MATERIALS

Pool Decking Options in Long Beach

The deck is what you actually walk on. Here is what we install every week in Long Beach — what each material costs, how it handles bare feet in summer, and how long it really lasts.

Travertine

Natural limestone, cool underfoot even in summer, and the most-installed premium pool deck in Southern California. French-pattern or honed 16×24 are the two favorites. Hand-sealed every 2–3 years and it lasts a lifetime.

Porcelain Pavers

20mm slab porcelain — the modern answer for clean, contemporary decks. Stain-proof, UV-stable color, salt-tolerant, and you can spec a single 24×48 or 32×32 plank look that does not date. Higher upfront cost, nearly zero maintenance.

Concrete Pavers

Manufactured pavers from Belgard, Angelus, and Acker-Stone. Cost-effective, individual stones can be lifted and reset if the deck shifts, and styles range from tumbled rustic to clean modern. The right midrange pick when you want a real paver look without a stone-yard budget.

Stamped & Decorative Concrete

Poured-in-place concrete with a stamped, broomed, or sandblasted finish. The most affordable replacement option and a clean look when it is done with proper color hardener and joint placement. Reseal every 3–4 years.

Flagstone & Natural Stone

Irregular Arizona flagstone, bluestone, or quartzite for an organic, hand-laid look. Premium cost, premium presence, and very low ongoing maintenance. Works especially well on hillside and naturalistic backyards.

Cool Deck & Texture Overlays

Acrylic-based overlays (Kool Deck, spray-deck, knockdown) over sound existing concrete. The right call when the slab is structurally fine but the surface is dated or hot. 5–10 year life on a properly prepped deck.

SIGNS YOUR LONG BEACH POOL DECK NEEDS REPLACING

When to Replace Your Long Beach Pool Deck

A pool deck does not usually fail overnight. Here is what to look for before it turns into a tripping hazard or a drainage problem.

01

Mid-Century Concrete Decks That Have Heaved

Bixby Knolls, Los Altos, California Heights, and Park Estates are loaded with original 1950s-60s broom-finished concrete decks. After 60+ years of root pressure, soil movement, and a thousand cycles of summer heat expansion, most of them have lifted at the seams, cracked through the wide flat sections, and sloped back toward the house. A new deck is rarely a luxury at that point — it is a tripping hazard fix.

02

Coastal Salt Tolerance (Belmont Shore, Naples)

Belmont Shore, Belmont Heights, Naples Island, and the Alamitos Peninsula get hit hard by salt mist year-round. Cheap stamped overlays delaminate, low-grade pavers efflorescence-blow within 18 months, and unsealed travertine pits at the joints. We spec porcelain pavers, premium-grade travertine, or properly sealed concrete pavers in the coastal zone — and avoid the materials that look fine in year one and fail in year three.

03

Drainage Tied Into the Lot, Not Bolted On

Long Beach lots drain to the street, to side-yards, or to dry wells depending on the neighborhood. A pool deck without designed-in drainage either pools water at the coping, sends runoff into the foundation, or violates city stormwater rules. We grade the slope, drop channel drains where they need to go, and tie into existing area drains — every project, not just the ones where it is easy.

04

Bay-Side and Canal-Lot Settlement

Naples canal lots and Alamitos Peninsula yards sit on alluvial fill with shallow groundwater. Decks there settle more than inland decks, especially at the edges away from the pool shell. We use deeper base rock, compact in lifts, and add edge restraint that the dry-rot-prone pressure-treated stuff cannot match.

05

Heat Underfoot in the Long Beach Sun

Standard gray concrete and dark pavers hit 140°F in July sun and burn bare feet. Travertine reads 15–25°F cooler than concrete in the same conditions. Light porcelain pavers and properly mixed cool-deck overlays land in the same zone. If you are barefoot in your backyard, this is not a small detail — it is the whole point of the deck.

06

Cool-Deck Overlay vs Full Replacement Calls

If your slab is structurally sound and the only complaint is color, surface, or heat, a Kool Deck / spray-deck overlay is the right call — and a third of the cost of full replacement. If the slab is cracking, heaving, or sloped wrong, an overlay just locks the problem in. We do a free walk-through and tell you honestly which one applies.

OUR DECKING PROCESS

How a Pool Deck Build Actually Works

A deck that lasts 20 years and one that fails in 5 are built the same way at the top — what separates them is the sub-base and the drainage. Here is our standard sequence.

1

On-Site Visit & Material Samples

We come to your Long Beach home, look at the existing deck, check drainage, and bring real material samples. Travertine in your hand, in your light, next to your tile — not a picture on a phone.

2

Demo & Haul-Off

Saw-cut, break out the old deck, and load out. Most demos are 1–3 days depending on size, slab thickness, and access. We protect coping, plaster, and adjacent landscaping every time.

3

Sub-Base & Drainage

Properly compacted base rock, graded slope away from the house and the pool coping, channel drains and area drains where the lot requires them. This is where decks live or die — and where the cheapest bids skip steps.

4

Material Install

Paver and stone install over a proper bedding layer with polymeric or mortar joints. Concrete pours include rebar where engineered, control joints in the right places, and color/stamp work the day of the pour. Most installs run 5–14 days.

5

Seal, Detail, Walk-Through

Seal natural stone and concrete, dial in joint sand on pavers, clean off every drop of mortar, and walk the finished deck with you. Care instructions and re-seal schedule are in writing so you know exactly what your deck needs and when.

POOL DECKING FAQs

Common Questions About Pool Decking in Long Beach

Typical Long Beach pool deck pricing on a 600–900 sq ft deck (rip-out and replace):

  • Stamped / decorative concrete — $12,000 to $22,000
  • Concrete pavers (Belgard, Angelus) — $15,000 to $28,000
  • Travertine — $18,000 to $35,000
  • Porcelain pavers (20mm slab) — $22,000 to $40,000
  • Flagstone / natural stone — $25,000 to $45,000
  • Cool-deck / Kool Deck overlay (over sound concrete) — $6,000 to $14,000

Coastal-zone properties (Belmont Shore, Naples) typically add 8–12% for marine-grade fasteners, premium sealing, and tighter access.

7 to 21 days on site, depending on material and size. Demo is 1–3 days. Sub-base and drainage is 2–5 days (this is the part where shortcuts fail later). Material install is 5–14 days — concrete is faster, paver and stone work is slower. Sealing and detail finish out the last day or two. A cool-deck overlay over an existing sound slab can be done in 4–7 days total.

Light-colored travertine is the standard answer — reads 15–25°F cooler than gray concrete in the same conditions, and stays comfortable on bare feet through most of the summer. Light porcelain pavers are right behind it. Properly mixed cool-deck overlays are designed for the same temperature drop. Avoid dark concrete pavers and pure black flagstone if barefoot comfort matters — they look great but they will roast your feet.

Decking work that does not change the footprint, structure, or pool barrier usually does not require a separate permit in Long Beach — strip-and-replace in the same shape is generally non-permit. Expanding the deck, changing pool barrier configuration, adding drainage tied to public storm systems, or adding electrical (deck lighting, outdoor kitchen tie-ins) does require a City of Long Beach permit. We pull whatever the project actually needs.

It comes down to the slab underneath. If the existing concrete is structurally sound — no through-cracks, no significant heaving, slope still drains correctly — a cool-deck or spray-deck overlay is a great call at roughly a third of the replacement cost. If the slab has cracks wider than a credit card, sections that have lifted, or slope back toward the house, an overlay just hides the problem temporarily. We do a free walk-through and give you a straight answer on which one your deck actually needs.

Only if the sub-base was done wrong. Pavers laid on properly compacted base rock with the right bedding layer and edge restraint stay flat for decades. The cheaper jobs that skip a real base — laying pavers on sand over loose dirt — start tilting within 2–3 years, especially on Naples canal lots and Alamitos Peninsula yards where the ground moves more. We spec real base, real compaction, and real edge restraint. If a paver does ever lift, we can pull it, re-bed it, and put it back — which is one of the advantages of paver decks over poured concrete.

Yes — and most Long Beach homeowners who are doing one start considering the other. The pool is already drained for the resurface, the deck is already torn up for the new install, equipment access is already staged, and you only deal with one mobilization. Combining usually saves 10–15% versus running the two projects separately and gets the backyard back faster.

"My husband and I used Werth Builders to create our backyard oasis and they definitely delivered. We absolutely love the way everything turned out and would recommend Peter and his company to anyone! I was very impressed with the fast response I always received when I contacted Peter or anyone working for him. They went above and beyond to make sure that we were happy each step of the way. They even pushed things through at the end to make sure our family that was visiting from out of town was able to enjoy it with us. Again, if you are looking for a contractor you should absolutely give Werth Builders a call."

"I contacted Peter Werth after seeing a patio roof he built for a friend. He was prompt and the consultation was very helpful. There were two challenges that were met in making and installing the new patio roof. The first one was how to build the roof around the chimney of the house and the second one was how to preserve the grapevines planted by my late husband. Both challenges were successfully met and the roof is great. Pete also gave me some advise on how to build up the patio floor to prevent flooding when it rains and could help me with that process in the future. I recommend Werth Builders to anyone needing any of their long list of services provided."

Coni C.

"We recently had our new pool constructed by Peter and his crew. Peter gave us the best price, he was very friendly and courteous. We had good communication with Peter throughout the entire process. His crew is very efficient and professional. The pool is awesome, well constructed and he added 3 spillway features. We are beyond pleased with the finished product and would recommend Werth Builders."

Noe T.

"I met with 5 different contractors and only received bids from 3 of them. One bid was exceptionally low, the other exceptionally high, and Werth Builders bid was right within the ballpark of what we expecting for the project's size. We put in a 600 sq. ft. patio (permitted) with lights and ceiling fans. We also laid down pavers and put drainage and cement on our side yard that used to be covered with weeds. Peter was great to work with. He was down to earth and approachable. We told him our vision and he made it happen. We didn't see any paper plans before they set to work and we were ok with that, but it did lead to a slightly bigger patio that we had originally planned for; still looked great. Peter responded to texts promptly and was able to accommodate our schedule. His crews were polite and showed up around 7am every morning when on site. Overall, solid experience."
