Etching and Scale from Long Beach Hard Water
Long Beach municipal water runs hard with high calcium. On a plaster pool that means chalky white scale at the waterline, etched soft spots on the steps and floor, and a finish that ages faster than the same finish would in Irvine or Mission Viejo. We balance the start-up chemistry carefully so a fresh resurface does not get hit with scale in its first month.
Coastal Salt Air and Mid-Century Pools
Belmont Shore, Naples Island, Belmont Heights, and the Alamitos Peninsula all sit in the heaviest salt-air zone in the city. Original 1950s-60s plaster in those neighborhoods is almost always overdue. We chip out the old finish, repair hollow spots that have built up over decades, and put a finish on that handles the coastal chemistry.
Naples Canal Dewatering During Chip-Out
Naples and parts of Belmont Shore sit over shallow groundwater. Drain a pool there without a plan and the shell can actually float. We dewater properly during chip-out, anchor as needed, and keep the shell stable through the cure. It is not a shortcut step you skip to win on price.
Tile and Coping Replaced on the Same Visit
Dated 6×6 waterline tile and chipped concrete coping age at the same rate as a Long Beach plaster finish. If we have the pool drained anyway, replacing tile and coping now is a fraction of what it costs to come back and do later. We bring real tile and coping samples to the on-site visit.
Sewer-Cleanout Drains (Not Street Dumping)
Long Beach requires drained pool water to go to the sanitary sewer cleanout, not the storm drain, and the city actively fines for violations. We drain to the cleanout every time, dechlorinate first, and pull a discharge confirmation where required. It is one of the easiest things to do right and one of the most common to see done wrong.
Honest Chip-Out vs Skim-Coat Calls
A skim-coat over old failing plaster is faster, cheaper, and fails in 2–4 years. We do full chip-outs as standard. The only time we would consider a partial is on a pool still on its first finish with no delamination — and that is rare. When chip-out is the right call, we say so.

A resurface that lasts is 80% prep. Here is how we run a resurface from drain to hand-off.
On-Site Visit & Real Samples
We come to your Long Beach home, look at the existing finish, and bring real-world plaster, quartz, and pebble samples. Color in a brochure is not the same as color in your light over your tile.
Drain & Full Chip-Out
We drain the pool legally to the sewer cleanout (no street dumping), then full chip-out of the existing finish to expose sound gunite. A skim-coat over old plaster is what makes finishes fail in three years — we do not do that.
Surface Prep & Bond Coat

Trowel application by certified crews. Pebble finishes get a controlled acid-wash exposure the morning after to bring the aggregate to the surface evenly — the step most pricing-by-the-square-foot crews skip.

For most Long Beach pools, yes — and the math is straightforward. White plaster lasts roughly 7–12 years here; PebbleTec or PebbleSheen lasts 15–20+. The price difference on a typical resurface is $4,000–$7,000. Spread over the extra decade of life, PebbleTec costs less per year. In coastal-air neighborhoods like Belmont Shore and Naples, the gap is wider because plaster degrades faster.
A cosmetic resurface (chip-out and new finish) does not require a City of Long Beach permit. Replacing tile and coping while the pool is drained also does not. Anything structural — reshaping the shell, replumbing, adding a spillover spa, gas or electrical work — does require a permit. Werth Builders pulls every permit a project actually needs.
Technically yes — it is called a bond-coat overlay or skim-coat. We almost never recommend it in Long Beach. The old plaster is already failing (that is why you are calling), and a new finish bonded to a failing layer fails with it, usually within 2–4 years. A proper chip-out is the difference between a finish that lasts and one that delaminates. We do not race to the bottom on this step.

The two extra steps coastal resurfaces need are dewatering during chip-out (shallow groundwater can lift an empty shell on canal-side and bay-side lots) and a finish picked for salt-air chemistry. We typically recommend PebbleSheen or quartz aggregate over standard plaster in Belmont Shore, Naples, Belmont Heights, and the Alamitos Peninsula because they hold up better against the coastal mineral profile.
